Snow, Cheese, and Amber Wine: My Unforgettable Winter Getaway to Vilnius

Published on 12 February 2025 at 12:00

My winter trip to Vilnius was an unforgettable journey that felt like stepping into a winter wonderland, complete with snow-dusted streets, frosty air, and a warm, inviting charm that only this Baltic city can offer. As the city transformed into a snowy canvas, I eagerly embraced the chance to explore its rich history, unique culinary scene, and vibrant culture.

I kicked off my gourmet adventure at Grey Restaurant, where the contemporary approach to Lithuanian cuisine redefined my expectations. Each dish was a delightful fusion of traditional flavors and modern techniques, creating an experience that was as much a visual treat as it was a feast for the taste buds. On the other hand, Mykolo 4 Restoranas, a charming spot offered a taste of historical Vilnius cuisine. The hearty, flavourful dishes seemed to tell the story of the city itself—rich in tradition and full of character.

A visit to Gabi Restoranas was an experience of pure comfort. Nestled in the heart of the city, this cozy haven served some of the best Lithuanian comfort food I’ve ever had, each bite leaving me feeling completely content and connected to the heart of Vilnius. One culinary discovery that stood out was Džiugas, Lithuania’s renowned hard cheese. Rich, savory, and with a flavor profile that lingered on the palate, it was a true delight to learn about its production process and cultural significance. I was hooked after just one bite!

As I explored the city, I was captivated by the history embedded in its streets. Vilnius Universitetas (Vilnius University) was a breathtaking sight, its historic architecture telling the story of centuries of learning and knowledge. I couldn’t help but be in awe of the beautiful buildings and the intellectual atmosphere that still lingers in this revered institution. From there, I made my way to Lukiškių Kalėjimas (Lukiškės Prison), where the echoes of its tumultuous past still resonate within the walls. It was an eye-opening visit that deepened my understanding of the city’s complex history. Walking through the Vilnius Ghetto was both humbling and emotional, offering a poignant reminder of the city’s past struggles and triumphs.

One of the most whimsical moments of my trip came when I stumbled upon the Užupio Respublika Constitution. This quirky, artistic area is not only a hub of creativity but also a place where the unconventional thrives. The Užupio Constitution itself is filled with playful and thought-provoking declarations—like “A dog has the right to be a dog,” and “Everyone has the right to be unique.” It felt like a celebration of individuality and freedom, capturing the spirit of the city.

A real treat during my trip was a stop at Ginatro Galeria, where I had the chance to taste amber wine, a unique drink that’s been crafted from Baltic amber for centuries. The earthy, resinous flavor of the wine was unlike anything I’d ever tasted, and learning about the centuries-old tradition of amber winemaking was fascinating. It’s a perfect example of how Vilnius blends its rich past with innovative contemporary culture.

When it came to accommodations, I couldn’t have asked for a more stylish stay than at Neringa Hotel. This classic gem perfectly captures the elegance and charm of Vilnius, with its retro-modern vibe and warm, welcoming atmosphere. I felt like I was transported to another era, yet still immersed in all the comforts of the present day.

A short trip to Trakai, a picturesque town just outside Vilnius, proved to be another highlight. The Trakai Castle, set against a stunning lake backdrop, was as enchanting as it sounds. I also had the pleasure of tasting the famous traditional kybynas pie at Kybynlar, a local institution. The delicate pastry filled with seasoned meat was absolutely delicious, and it was fun to learn the history behind this beloved Lithuanian dish.

Back in Vilnius, my stay at Artagonist Art Hotel was the perfect conclusion to this unforgettable trip. This hotel was more than just a place to rest—it was an immersive art experience in itself, with contemporary works adorning the walls and an overall creative atmosphere. Located just a short stroll from the Vilnius Christmas Market, I was able to enjoy the festive spirit of the city, filled with twinkling lights, handcrafted goods, and the smell of mulled wine wafting through the air.

Vilnius in winter is a treasure trove of history, culture, and gastronomy, all wrapped up in a snow-dusted bow. From exploring the city’s historic sites to sampling delicious local cuisine, every moment felt like an adventure. Whether it was the rich history, the delicious food, or the quirky charm of places like Užupis, Vilnius left a lasting impression on me.

I know I’ll return to this captivating city again and again, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a European destination that combines charm, history, and culinary delights.
